5 Reasons Why The Afrona Is Not Working on Your Curly Hair

in Aug 8, 2025

The Afrona is a patented, satin-lined hair wrap designed to preserve your curls, prevent flattening and be worn both out and to bed. We created the Afrona to protect curly hair without compromising function or style. But if it’s not working for you, there might be a few things to check first.

Here are 5 common reasons why the Afrona might not be giving you the results you want — and how to fix it.

1. Your Hair Is Too Short

If your curly hair is too short the afrona may not work

If your hair is very short or close to the scalp, you may experience your curls flattening when you wear the Afrona. This is because the Afrona needs some length to lift your hair up, so that the fabric doesn’t press on the ends of your curls, flattening them.

What You Can Do
Use the Afrona for moisture retention, frizz control, and overall hair health. You can also use a pick to fluff out any areas that flatten. If you are growing out your hair, the flattening will eventually stop as your hair grows.

2. You Have the Wrong Size

Find the right size Afrona for the best results on your curls

Sizing is a key factor in the Afrona’s functionality. An Afrona that's too short won’t properly cover your curls to protect them. One that's too long can pull down on your hair and stretch out your curl pattern. The right fit allows the Afrona to stand up over your head.

What You Can Do
Take our Afrona Size Quiz to find your perfect fit. A well-fitting Afrona is the difference between just wearing it and loving it.

3. Your Hair Care Routine Is Off

If you don't have the right curly routine the Afrona might not work for your curly hair

The Afrona doesn’t create curls, it preserves what’s already there. If your wash day didn’t give you the definition you were hoping for, the Afrona can’t reverse that... but it can cover it up beautifully!

What You Can Do
Focus on moisturizing and defining your curls before using the Afrona. It works best when paired with a solid curl routine to help your style last longer.

4. You don't use it often enough

Humidity, UV rays, Cold weather can all affect curly hair

If you’re only using your Afrona occasionally, you might not be seeing its full potential. Curly hair can get damaged anytime, not just while you sleep. Exposure to wind, humidity, UV rays, cold air, and workouts can all affect the look and health of your curls.

What You Can Do

Make the Afrona a regular part of your routine, both day and night, for long-term results.

5. You're Wearing It Wrong

In order for the Afrona to work on your hair it needs to be worn properly

Different occasions call for different styles. If you're sleeping, wear the Afrona in the Crown style. If you're out and your hair will be exposed to the weather, or other elements, go for full coverage with the Crown or Crown Bun styles. Also, it's important not to stuff your hair inside the Afrona. Instead, allow the afrona to lift your curls up.

In Summary

The Afrona is here to protect your curls, not perform miracles. When used correctly and consistently — with the right size, styling habits, and technique — it becomes a powerful tool for your curly hair.
